Cairo, IL Part 1-Gateway to the South
Back in the 15 passanger van and it was obvious how different the atomosphere was from the last ride (read my 15 Passanger Van blog to know more). I felt so much peace in my heart as we listened to bluegrass music, laughing, and having fun while on our way to Cairo, IL, a town I never knew existed but a town that would change my view on faith, poverty, and prayer forever.
The moment we entered the town I felt the difference, the stench of oppression and the pain of hopelessness. A little background, Cairo is the meeting point of two great rivers the Mississippi and the Ohio River, it was once a place where goods were traded through the rivers and the railroads. Cairo is bordered by both the rivers and the states of Missouri and Kentucky. Needless to say it was once a town that flourished economically and so much history lies within this small 30 to 50 block town, but somewhere between the mighty rivers, corruption, and the Civil War riots, it became the town that has the stench of opression, the pain of hopelessness and the faith of a group of individuals that have given there life to praying for this city that once bore a Sign Proclaiming Death from the moment you arrive.
The Cairo House of Prayer! People joined by faith and by their love for a town that others wouldn’t look twice at. A community, a family, our family. Since our leaders Jessica and Amanda where a part of this family I feel a connection to them because while we pioneer Community Life Jess and Amanda have brought along with them their love for Cairo. A love that has extended to the all the members of our ComLife family. There is more history, more prayers, and more visions that I plan to share, so just bare with me because in a simple weeks time I find myself going through an extension of emotions and an excitement of what is to come for the town of Cairo, IL.
